i spent most of the weekend with my family in Dallas, Texas. We went out to eat, met up with friends, and went...shopping! I posted about my newest sweater recently :)
not that i can wear it any time soon in this heat...


Surprisingly, I didn't take many photographs in Dallas...I kinda napped a lot...
Lately, time seems to be running out a bit too quickly. And when I have a moment to myself, I don't want to do a thing! You know what I mean?

last wednesday, a few fresh meat gals and myself were asked to participate in the september 17th bout. the opposing team, spindletop rollergirls, needed a few extra players due to injuries, etc.

we were up against one of our very talented houston teams, but dang if we didn't play as hard as we could :)

dystopian book wormz

so far, like a lot of you, my favorite book of all time is hunger games.

as well as

i picked up this trilogy because i saw students with their noses buried in Hunger Games [same reason i read the Twilight saga]. i had to know what the deal was, so i checked them out from the school library [thanks paula!]. and could not put them down. i seriously love the kind of book where i will arrive at my destinations a bit earlier just so i have time to read in the car...

because i have noticed a lot more people getting into the series, i thought i would make a few recommendations...sort of an "if you like this, read this" type deal :)

Divergent [by Veronica Roth].
i went through it so fast that, months later, I forgot I read it!

which is crazy because i really enjoyed it. strange...i know.

a student noticed that I was reading the Hunger game trilogy and recommended Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore. I liked Graceling a tad more, but they are both awesome :)

more recently, i finished reading Ashes, by Ilsa Bick. it was a pretty VIP read because the book wasn't out yet [librarian friend, remember?]. this book is a LOT darker than the Hunger Games...
and there are a couple twists that make you go "WHAT!!!" definitely worth the read...and the wait for book two that doesn't come out until next year! ugh!

okay....so anyone that has read any of these books...what can you recommend to me??? i am in dire need of a book i don't want to put down :)

and i tried getting into the girl with the dragon tattoo...but i couldn't do it. i will try again at a later date...

Touristy Houston part 3

Mam's House of Ice snocones are so delicious! When Daniel and I lived in the Heights area of Houston we were over there a bit too often :)

 Daniel loves ordering his snocones with a scoop of ice cream. So far the yummiest snocone/ice cream combo he has ordered is Dreamsicle, but in this photo he's got a Root Beer Float thing going on.

Everyone else ordered Tiger's Blood or Cherry :)
I stick to Wedding Cake because a) it is delicious, and b) no stained lips, teeth, or tongue! ;)

Other than eating and walking around, we took my family out a LOT. Below is a photo of my sister playing a game of Giant Jenga at Barcadia. We also checked out Catbirds, Poison Girl, and a local place called Hunter's Pub.

I wish I had an extra day to rest after such a "touristy" weekend!

Touristy Houston part 2

 As previously mentioned, a few relatives visited during Labor Day weekend. This photo was also shot in the vicinity of the "We <3 Houston" sign.

Baby Barnaby's is a Houston breakfast must in my book. I don't care if we have to wait 30 minutes or so. The food and service is dang good.

And because we are on the topic of food - Whataburger does not exist near Miami, Florida.
This is what happens when you only get to eat a Whataburger every few years:

Touristy Houston

My cousins visited us from Miami, Florida [and my sister and her boyfriend as well] this Labor Day weekend. I made a random list of fun things to do [most involved eating!] while in Houston. :) So's not to overload anyone with photos, I am breaking this down into 2 or 3 posts. :D

Why does my cousin [center] look like jumping in the air requires no effort? :)

The famous "We <3 Houston" sign in the Heights area...for obvious photo ops.

 Rode the Metro Rail around downtown Houston.

 A few of our metro rail stops included Discovery Green for some snocones, Bombay Pizza for some grubbin', and the Japanese gardens for some sight seeting. The most interesting sights we saw included massive coi fish, as well as a group of L.A.R.P.E.R.s :)

We also stopped at Hermann Park for some paddle boating.

 Ended our metro rail traversing at the Flying Saucer.

Ely [cousin] and Javi [cousin-in-law] have driven my sister and I around Miami time and time again when we visit over the holidays and summer. I am so glad they could come to Houston so that I could have the opportunity to drive them around and show them some cool stuff. :)

I am sad that they have departed, but will see them soon over winter break!
