my name is roxy.
I guess I will start with some basics. My entire family is from Cuba. My cousins, my sister, and I are the first generation born in the U.S. Until I was in 6th grade I moved between California [where I was born], Florida, Texas, and Saudi Arabia. I’ve been residing in the Houston, TX area for about 11 years now – not including the 4 years I spent in Austin, TX [hook ’em!] acquiring my Bachelor’s in Psychology.
I teach 7th grade math students. The journey has been rough, but I think I’ve got the hang of it. I am actually very lucky. The school where I work is full of such fun people and great friends.
Between work days, I like creating things. I’ve been sewing on and off for about 10 years. Last March I opened a shop on Etsy. I’m still very excited about it and have also participated in a few fairs/bazaars. I craft because it is fun for me. I love reading people’s expressions when they see my creations – it’s the best part.
I am also into photography. My favorite experience was developing my own black and white prints a few years ago.
I just moved. For the past year I lived in the Heights area of Houston. I absolutely adore the bohemian nature of the Heights, but purchasing a home in there is very difficult on a teacher’s salary. Daniel and I moved elsewhere, and sadly, outside the loop. But! the new home is amazing. And although I have never really thought of myself as a decorator, I think I’ve done an exceptional job in our new home, which I like to refer to as “the forest.”
Here are a few reasons why…
Tree decals from PopWall’s Etsy shop.
Gnome Chomsky from Garden Ridge and fake tree stump from Pier One.
Stump and cardinal salt&pepper shakers from Pier One, owl from Garden Ridge.
As soon as everything is “done,” I will give y’all a tour of the place.
Mmmhmm, I said “y’all.”
On to my family!
Daniel is my boyfriend and my best friend.
We have been together going on 5 years. Those of you trying to do the math have it wrong. We only started dating after college, one fateful night, when I thought we were saying goodbye.
Daniel and I live with three other roommates: Sampson, Buster, and Osa.
Sampson is Daniel’s dog. He is the most noble of the lot. I love when he raises one eyebrow at me in that, “Quit the baby talk, lady” kinda way. I say he’s a black lab/giant dog mix. We aren’t too sure what he could be mixed with, but whatever it is, it’s HUGE.
Oh, and by the way, I am 5 feet tall.
He actually comes up all the way to my face, but after making him jump up about 10 times, poor Sammy’s legs were giving out.
My darling pup [who is no pup at all] is Buster. I found her on Craigslist. She was listed as a “boxer mix,” but is actually a boxer/pitbull mixed with a golden/chow. Her temperament is funny. She scares the crap out of strangers because she is so defensive for all of 2 seconds. As soon as Buster gets a whiff or lick of a person, she wants to be their BFF. She’s my little love muffin!
This is the photograph that drew me to her.
And this is how in love we are, almost 5 years later
The latest addition to our family, is little Osa – or Baby Oh-oh as I have been running around singing. Osa’s story is a tad more interesting. I was driving to work this past November when I had to slam on my breaks because the smallest little pup was wandering around in the middle of a busy road. I immediately turned my hazards on and ran out of my car like a crazy woman. At this point Little One decided to take off down the road. I’m sure it was an entertaining sight…
Little One was so…well, little! She was terrified in my car and cried and cried. As soon as I made it to work Daniel brought a box out to the parking lot and we took her inside and decided she would be ours.
We named her Osa, or Osita, because she looked like a little bear the way she always kept her mouth open ready to snap.
That is all for now – tomorrow is
a workday after all! Have a lovely evening, dear friends
peace, love, and sushi 😀
